As a famous whisky, Canadian Club ® certainly has had an infamous past. During the Prohibition era, Canadian Club was a favorite of Al Capone. To obtain the whisky from across the Canadian border, Capone donated the construction of a tower to a church in Windsor, Canada. The tall structure was used as a signal for when Capone could safely cross the Detroit River to pick-up his Canadian Club. Such admiration was well-known to Canadian Club, though. Before Capone, Canadian Club was so popular in the U.S. that the brand's American competitors felt threatened and successfully lobbied Congress to add the word "Canadian" to its name previously Walker's Club. Thus were born Canadian Club and the Canadian whisky category.
